NCC Hosts Annual Carnival Security Workshop 2017

Port of Spain, Trinidad: February 7, 2017: In an ongoing effort to work with the national community to help keep the public safe during the Carnival Season, the National Carnival Commission (NCC) hosted more than 140 participants at its annual Carnival Security workshop, entitled “Planning and Co-coordinating Security Management for Major Events” on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the NCC VIP Lounge at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

The one-day intensive workshop successfully convened members from the Police Service, and the Ministry of National Security with various stakeholders within the Security Industry; including local security companies, heads of various Mas Band security teams, and Security Supervisors and Personnel.

Thursday’s workshop provided the perfect opportunity to share ideas on enhancing public safety, surveillance tools and anti-terrorism, effective disaster management, and proper Mas event planning as ways of maintaining the peace and responding appropriately to any emergencies that can arise during the Carnival Season.

Discussions were also held on the importance of identifying and following proper customer service protocols and the benefits of emotional intelligence as a powerful tool in proactive conflict resolution and de-escalating threats before they occur.

The panel of presenters included Deodath Doolalchan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, TTPS; Lt. Col. Malcolm Nedd; James Thompson, Security Coordinator; Donna Chapman, Manager, Human Resource Consultant; and Earl Hernandez, Chief Disaster Risk Officer. Also on the panel, representing the NCC, were Clyde Charles, Security Manager, Dr. Mareba Scott, Strategy and Business Development Manager.

The NCC traditionally hosts the workshop, fully believing that effective coordination and communication between security industry stakeholders, event sponsors, emergency management agencies, and law enforcement agencies is the key to ensuring that Carnival events run smoothly, contingencies are in place for any potential major incidents, and everyone can be expected to experience an enjoyable and safe Carnival throughout the nation.
