NCC Remembers The Mighty Composer

Port of Spain, Trinidad: December 6, 2018: The National Carnival Commission of Trinidad and Tobago (NCC) joins with the nation in remembering Fred Mitchell, widely and better known as The Mighty Composer, who passed away on December 5, 2018, following an ongoing period of illness.

A legend within the Calypso and Cultural communities, Composer came from a musical family, making his memorable debut as a member of Sparrow’s Original Young Brigade Tent. He later gifted the world several well-loved songs, including Child Training, Carnival Fever, Black Fallacy, Workers' Lament, and Leave Meh Man Alone, among many others.

His body of work in the field was only surpassed by his work behind the scenes as a founding member of the first Calypsonians’ Association and later on, the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation, where he would successfully serve as an executive member for many years.

Composer’s influence and work extended beyond calypso as he was also beloved as one of San Fernando’s longest-participating Red Indian portrayers, was a founding member of the Barataria Ballplayers Organisation, a pivotal figure in the Emancipation Support Committee’s emancipation celebrations, and a driver of a nationwide movement for the inclusion of the Shango Belief System by an Act of Parliament.

Composer’s passing comes as a great loss not just to the entire cultural community but to the Nation as a whole. The NCC extends sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues and peers during this especially difficult time.
